Or buy Cyberduck from the Mac. Cyberduck is a popular free and open-source FTP/SFTP client for Windows and Mac. This FTP client from Switzerland is one of three excellent FTP clients recommended by cPanel.It has simple operation interface and single column view, which make users feel very relaxed, convenient and quick.

In Mac OS X, to use Cyberduck to transfer files via SFTP:

  1. Double-click the Cyberduck icon. When Cyberduck opens, at the upper left, click Open Connection...; alternatively, from the File menu, select Open Connection....
  2. At the top of the sheet that appears, from the drop-down menu, select SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol).
  3. In the 'Server:' field, type the address of the remote host to which you wish to connect (e.g., mercury.uits.indiana.edu).
  4. In the 'Username:' and 'Password:' fields, type your username and passphrase for the remote computer. To save your password to the Keychain, check Add to Keychain.
  5. To log into a directory other than your home directory, at the bottom of the sheet, click More Options. In the 'Path:' field, type the directory name (e.g., www).
  6. Click Connect to open the SFTP connection.

    The first time you connect to a host, Cyberduck will display a warning such as 'Unknown host key for server.uits.indiana.edu'. Click Allow to continue.

  7. A window will open displaying the list of files on the remote host. To upload files or folders, drag them from a Finder window into the Cyberduck window. To download files or folders, drag them from Cyberduck into a Finder window.

Installing the Cyberduck SFTP Client

For SFTP connections on a Mac, the CAT recommends the use of the Cyberduck client, which can be downloaded from https://cyberduck.io/download/. Note that this software requires MacOS 10.7 or later.

Connecting to a Server

Upon launching Cyberduck, the following screen will be displayed.

Click the globe button directly above the 'Open Connection' text in the upper left corner of the window. The following popup will appear.

From the dropdown menu at the top, select 'SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol)' as shown in the screenshot above. Enter the name of the machine you're trying to connect to in the server field. Enter your username and password into the respective fields, as shown.

Transferring Files

Once you've connected to a remote server, something similar to the interface shown below will appear. You can transfer files to and from the remote server using a drag and drop interface – simply drag something onto your desktop (or into a local directory, etc) to copy it to your computer.
